Safe Childhoods Workshops for students
On November
5 and 6, Safe Childhoods will be presenting workshops to our students. Below is
an outline of the content of these workshops. We will divide the groups by
class rather than age, so if you would prefer your child to join their age
group, please let us know.
We recommend that the age is the age
they turn in that year of school it is not advised to show the presentation to
any ages younger than this.
Presentation C for 13+ year olds
(Years 9 and 10)
After introducing ourselves and the
purpose of us being there, which we describe as "Providing Information,
Raising Awareness and most importantly Opening Up Communication" about
sexual abuse.
We discuss WHAT sexual abuse is, WHO;
potential offenders, HOW it happens; detailed discussions on child grooming for
the purpose of abuse. In this age group, as children have already
received sex education we supply detailed information on what constitutes
sexual abuse. We will also be doing some brainstorming and expect those
discussion results could be quite graphic.
Grooming is a long topic and includes
a lot on the subject of internet grooming. We show a video of a teenage girl
who has formed a relationship with an online predator, the conversation she
uses to justify it shows the effectiveness of grooming.
An interactive discussion is done to
highlight how much time children are spending online.
There is information on situational
sexual abuse (rape and date rape) and we discuss intoxication and that not saying
"no" doesn't mean "yes".
We follow up talking about physical
and online ways to try and stay safe. We constantly remind throughout the
presentation that it's OK to talk and encourage students to talk to their
parents or a safe adult about any concerns they have.
We end the presentation discussing
what to do if sexual abuse happens to either you or a friend. Again about
talking, who to talk to and a list of contacts.
PRESENTATION B for 9-12 year olds
(Years 4-8)
Presentation B is very similar to
Presentation C. We are mindful of not introducing sexual matters and
therefore limit detail and brainstorming around actual sexual abuse. We give a
definition and a brief more sanitised description.
We still talk about situational
sexual abuse but without talk of alcohol or drugs.
PRESENTATION A for 4-8 year olds (KG – Year 3)
We show a short animated
rhyming cartoon where a young boy talks about his "private parts" and
the fact nobody should be allowed to touch them but when a family friend did he
told his parents and was praised for his strength and honesty. The cartoon is
to the point but remains light and uplifting.
This is followed by 5 slides where we
clarify what's been shown then talk about private parts, not keeping secrets,
taking gifts, always telling your parents your plans and safe adults.
I hope this provides yourselves with
enough information of what Safe Childhoods will be presenting and enables you
to communicate our presentation effectively to the parents at your school.
