Hosting WA3 last year by JHS

Widhya Asih 3

Day 1, Monday 16th, 2015

Sunrise Junior High School was lucky enough to host Widhya Asih 3 orphanage children for

three days during March, 2015. The children from the orphanage travelled a long way from

Singaraja to Sunrise School Kerobokan. On the day of their arrival, they looked a bit tired and

car sick, but then perked up when they were welcomed by Miss Jules; who led them to the High

School Science classroom. In total, there were 15 people who we hosted! 13 children and 2

staff from the orphanage.

Sunrise High School students were shy when we all first met the children from WA3, they had

to introduce themselves in Bahasa. The WA3 children were also shy, but still tried to introduce

themselves in English. We did circle talk and then played ‘if you’ games and musical chairs. In

the afternoon, the 15 guests went home with Sunrise JHS students and teachers, to relax for

the evening. Jason was really excited, as he went home with four orphanage children and they

all had happy faces.

Day 2, Tuesday 17th, 2015

The second day was a fun and a great day for Sunrise and Widhya Asih 3 students. We started

the day with Ms. Susi’s team building activities. All the students were divided into two groups.

They played ‘safe if…’, ‘crabby race’, ‘say it with actions’ and ‘shoot the ball’ in the first session

of the morning.

Sean’s group won the crabby race. Everyone in his group moved like a crab pretty fast with

their legs attached to each other’s hands. That was pretty fun and it was really interesting to

watch! Tom’s group won the ‘say it with actions’ game. His group created a very cool tree to

represent ‘green’. Tom’s group also won the ‘shoot the ball’ game. His team scored 14 points

and Sean’s scored 10. Overall, Tom’s team was the winner of the first morning session games.

They got special treats of marshmallow and chocolate bars, whilst the team who came in

second place got marshmallows.

The second morning session was run by Ms. Karla. Mr. Yoga and Miss Ayu. The students worked

in group of 4 and were given a balloon. They had to move the balloon around their group using

only their foreheads, feet and spoons. They then played balloon barber. It was a lot fun and

Jade and Kadek could not stop laughing for few minutes because their faces were full of shaving

cream from their popped balloons. On the volley ball court, Mr Yoga played watery balloon

volley. The boys got wet, but they had fun.

In the Bale-Bale, the students then wrote magic words on papers with Miss Ayu in which their

writing could be read when the paper was put to a candle flame. The Widhya Asih 3 children

were so excited to do this and intrigued by the magic of science.

At 10.30am, we all headed to Beachwalk to watch the movie: ‘Cinderella’. It was the first time

on escalators and lifts for some of the WA3 children. Because of the kind donations and Bake

sale events, we were lucky enough to budget in popcorn and drinks for everyone! All the

students were surprised and very thankful! Everyone ate popcorn while watching the film, a

few of us burst into tears during the emotional parts of the film.

The next stop for the afternoon was the barbeque party at Jason’s house. We all went to the

barbeque party in four different cars: Mr Yoga’s, Ms Karla’s, Laetitia’s and Jason’s. The students

threw  themselves in into the pool once they arrived at Jason’s house. A few of them played

volley ball, trampoline and a few Widya Asih 3 students were relaxing while they watched their

mates play.  Some students, parents and  a teacher from other classes talso came to enjoy

because they also hosted some of the WA3 children. Along with JHS and the WA3 guests, there

was Iluh, Summer, Brody, Agus, Ms Rachael and Laetitia.

It was a fun afternoon and everyone was gleeful and content. We all ate and ate and ate, and

laughed and laughed and laughed, and played and played and played, and ate again. The

barbeque was outstanding. Jason’s dad is an expert at the BBQ! Jason’s mum had prepared so

many treats and the salad and vegetables were fresh. The chips were fine and crispy. All the

drinks were refreshing! The chilies were very spicy and the strawberry and blueberry puddings

were just perfect for the dessert. Around 7.30pm, the students all went home with big smiles

and happiness in their hearts… just what we wanted to see ;)

Day 3, Wednesday 18th, 2015

Day 3 was the last day of the Widhya Asih 3 visit and it really felt that time had gone too quick!

The WA3 children had a chance to experience the first three lessons on the JHS Sunrise School

timetable. It reminded the Sunrise students of when they visited Widhya Asih 3 in Singaraja last

September 2014, they were taken to their public school and given a tour around the school.

The first lesson was PE. Basketball with Mr Wima and Mr Pasek. The next lesson was Peer

Support Preparation and Peer Support. The Widhya Asih 3 children were assigned to co lead

peer support groups. They taught the sunrise students to play traditional games like ‘Naga

panjang’, ‘Congklak’ and ‘Bentengan’. It was a fun morning filled with everyone learning new

skills and games.

Time went on and the morning break gong rang. The high school students and Widhya Asih 3

children had snack together, it was a delicious array of cakes and pastries that Ms. Veny

generously donated! When everyone’s bellies were full, they went upstairs to the JHS English

room to watch photos and videos from Day 1 to the morning of Day 3. Laughs and smiles were

had by all the students. The photos and videos recalled all the funny and loving moments of the

time they had spent together over the previous three days. At the same time, it reminded them

that the Widhya Asih 3 students had to go back to Singaraja after lunch that day. Everyone

wrote their feelings on pieces of paper. All of the Widya Asih 3 children wrote that they were so

happy to have been in Sunrise School. They were looking forwards to visiting Sunrise again in

the future. They also wrote that time went so fast when they were at Sunrise School.

Before Widhya Asih 3 students went back to Singaraja, the whole school had a reflection time.

WA3 children performed a dance during reflection time. It was a very interesting dance. There

were three dancers and each of the dancers would choose and invite the audience to dance

along with them. The other children were sitting in a circle behind them, singing. A few

students and teachers like Tate, Agus, Ms Karla, Ms Jules, Mr Aris and Mr Yoga were chosen

and had to dance in the middle of the Bale- Bale. Many Sunrise students were trying to hide

behind the poles and behind their friends so that they were not chosen. It was interesting and

entertaining.

After lunch, the time for Widhya Asih 3 children to leave had come. Sunrise students took them

to the parking lot and waved them good bye. The High school teachers and Ms Jules went along

with them too to wave good bye to the Widhya Asih 3 children. We wished them safe travels

back to Singaraja and gave them some Sunrise memorabilia so that they could take a little of

Sunrise with them. All our JHS students loved the experience and felt overwhelmingly happy that

they had been a part of such a special exchange of kindness. Until next year!
