Baby slings for refugees collection

Dear Sunrise Families and Friends of Sunrise,

We just received the below email from one of our parents and would love to help out. If you have a baby carrier to donate, please drop it into school before Thursday!

Hope you’re well. Thoughtful friends of mine in Australia have set up a drop off collection program for Baby carriers to be sent to help out the Refugee crisis. I thought perhaps you might like to send a note out to the school if anyone has a spare carrier they don't use anymore that they could donate and drop off to the school and I can collect in by this Thursday at the latest. They are being taken to Aus to then be shipped to Greece.

Please find attached the Media press kit set up by the amazing ladies based in Sydney who are operating this initiative, whom I’ve also cc’d in this email.

Please find the Press release here

And further details below…

WHAT CAN YOU DO?
1. Donate any baby wearing devices
2. Donate money to cover our shipping costs to get these items to the people who need them. Any excess funds will be directed to Kos Kindness or other groups working directly with refugees.
3. If you've got questions, we've got answers!See our frequently asked questions below.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:
Q: How do I know my item will get to the people it’s intended for?
A: We are now in touch with the international effort that has started out of the UK, so our donations will be coordinated with those coming in from others all over the world. Together we'll work with Kos Kindness, as well as identifying other organisations like them who can help distribute your donated carriers to refugees in need. We will keep you updated as we know more.
Q: Do you know if these items are wanted?
A: We know that agencies on the ground have requested carriers and slings. We would assume that this request has come from the refugees themselves.
Q: How will they be distributed?
A: As per the first question, we are now in touch with the coordinated international efforts for this cause and we are working with them and the individual charities in order to get the carriers to the appropriate charity to then be distributed appropriately.
Q: What types of carriers are you accepting?
A: At the moment we are accepting all carriers excepting bag slings and fake carriers. Please see the safety post for further information:https://www.facebook.com/AussieBabywearers4Refugees/photos/a.1622125384713948.1073741828.1621840864742400/1622441221349031/?type=1&permPage=1
Q: Where can I take clothes that I have to donate?
A: At the moment, we are not collecting clothes. Unfortunately sending clothes overseas is prohibitively expensive right now so the best place for you to take your clothing donations is to your local women’s shelters.
WHAT CARRIERS ARE YOU ACCEPTING?
SAFE CARRIERS
Safety is important to us. There are two types of carriers we will not accept, and we ask drop off points to check through their donations:
  1. BAG SLINGS - Bag slings are the only type of carrier which has deaths attributed to it. It's closed top and lack of airflow, lack of adjustability and lying down positioning which encourage chin to chest are all dangerous. Only one bag sling brand has been recalled but all designs are the same.Recall information here:http://www.recalls.gov.au/content/index.phtml/itemId/973859See also in USA: http://www.cpsc.gov/…/Infantino-Recalls-to-Replace-SlingRi…/Sling type information here p24: joom.ag/mbObPlease do not donate bag slings to us or anywhere else, please donate them to wildlife rescue centres where they are used for keeping orphaned baby animals warm.
  2. FAKE CARRIERS - There is a prevalence at the moment of fake carriers. Ergo is the most counterfeited, with Manduca and now Tula following. Problems with fakes include the dyes used (not safe for babies skin or sucking on), the type of fabric and thread used for stitching, the way they are stitched (not reinforced properly), quality of webbing, elastic and buckles (so many cracked buckles!) wonky padding and waistbands and more. We ask that if you know your carrier is a fake to please not donate it. If you are unsure, please do not donate it. More info here: http://southlondonslings.co.uk/…/untested-baby-carriers-an…/
Please check over your safe, clean, good condition carriers for donation. If you would wear your child in it, then we are happy to accept it with the above exceptions. Front pack carriers, stretchy wraps, woven wraps, ring slings, padded rail slings, pouch slings, mei teis, half buckles and full buckles are welcome.
Please include picture instructions and TICKS with your carrier if you can. These are generally easily googleable and printable. If your carrier allows for sub optimal small baby positioning (ie not meeting TICKS), please don't include this part.General optimal positioning cards from Babywearing International, Inc.here http://babywearinginternational.org//optimal-positioning-…/

THANK YOU for your support and generosity xx
